The Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced the launch of a pod taxi service to improve commuting to the Bandra-Kurla Complex, the business hub of Mumbai.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has given the green light for this service on the 8.8 km route between Bandra and Kurla railway stations.

According to the Chief Minister’s office, these pods will have a capacity of six passengers each and will run at a speed of 40 km per hour. They will also have 38 halts along the route.

The project will be implemented through a public-private partnership, which is expected to greatly enhance the commute between the two railway stations and the BKC area

Last year, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a pod taxi service, which will connect the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar to the proposed Film City, will be launched by 2024.

The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) approved the detailed project report of the Rs 810-crore project in Sector 21. According to the plan, there will be 12 stations on the 12-km route connecting the two mega projects within the YEIDA area.

Pod taxis, officially known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), are a type of public transportation system that consists of small, driverless vehicles designed to carry a small number of passengers or goods.
