The weather begins to change in March, bringing a gradual rise in temperature and the onset of summer. This increase in temperature significantly impacts not only daily life but also vehicles. During the summer season, both bikes and cars, particularly four-wheelers, experience various issues. Therefore, it is essential for car owners to take proper care of their vehicles to avoid problems during their journeys.

Arvind Kumar, an automobile mechanic from Raebareli district with 20 years of experience at the Government Industrial Training Institute, Bachhrawan, spoke to Local18 about the challenges high temperatures pose for cars. He emphasised the importance of proper car maintenance, paying special attention to certain key aspects, and shares a few essential care tips.

Essential Summer Care Tips For Four-Wheelers

Check Engine Oil

In summer, engine temperature can rise, increasing the risk of overheating. It is crucial to check the radiator and coolant levels regularly. Maintaining the correct engine oil level helps keep the engine cool. If the car’s temperature rises excessively, it should be stopped immediately and allowed to cool down.

Check Tyre Pressure

The hot road surface in summer can cause air inside the tyres to expand, increasing the risk of a tyre burst. Tyre pressure should be checked regularly, and excessive air should not be filled. Tyres should be inspected for wear and tread depth to ensure a safe journey.

Take Care of the Battery

High temperatures can cause car batteries to overheat, affecting their performance. Battery terminals should be cleaned, and grease should be applied to prevent rust. The battery voltage and water level must be checked regularly. If the battery is old, it should be replaced in time.

Protect the Car Interior

Strong sunlight can damage the car’s paint and interior. Cars should be parked in the shade, or sunshades should be used to lower the interior temperature. Window sunshades can help reduce heat build-up inside the car. Wiper blades should also be checked, as excessive heat can cause them to deteriorate.

Keep AC Filters Clean

A properly functioning air conditioner is essential in summer. AC filters and vents should be cleaned regularly to ensure efficient cooling. If the AC is not cooling effectively, the gas level should be checked. It is advisable to service the AC before embarking on a long journey.

Prevent Fuel Evaporation

Petrol evaporates more quickly in summer, which can affect the car’s mileage. Keeping the fuel tank at least half full helps maintain pressure in the fuel system. Avoid refuelling during hot afternoons, as fuel evaporation is higher at this time.

Install UV Protection Film

Strong sunlight can heat the car’s interior, potentially damaging seats and the dashboard. Installing UV protection film on car windows can help reduce heat build-up. Light-coloured seat and steering covers made of heat-resistant material are advisable. Keeping a slight opening in the car windows ensures better air circulation and ventilation.
