New Delhi: The country’s healthcare system is closely monitoring the outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, in Pune even as Maharashtra authorities are working with the Centre to contain it. Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute Gurgaon treated a GBS case last week even as most reported cases have surfaced from Maharashtra. “The young girl started having progressive weakness in her legs,” neurologist Praveen Gupta said. “She came on a wheelchair. After five days of treatment, she was walking again.”

GBS is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the nerve system, causing muscle weakness and multiple dysfunctions. It is caused by bacterial infection and is not communicable person to person.

There have been at least five deaths in Maharashtra suspected to be due to GBS since last month. The number of people infected in Pune has increased to 158.
