Amateur stargazers and professional astronomers are most likely to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience soon. A nova is likely to appear in the sky anytime between now and September. Situated at a distance of about 3,000 light-years away the star system T Coronae Borealis, or T Cr B, is likely to explode. If the star explodes, it will be visible to the naked eye here on Earth, reports CNN. The star exploded in 1946 last time and some people who witnessed it will have an opportunity to see it once again. It will again explode 80 years later. Dr. Rebekah Hounsell, an assistant research scientist specializing in nova events at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, has confirmed the possibility of the incident. He told CNN that it is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will create a lot of new astronomers out there. He said further that the incident will give young people an opportunity to observe for themselves a cosmic event and ask their questions.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, this star was first observed in 1217 when Burchard, abbot of Ursberg, Germany, noted his observance of “a faint star that for a time shone with great light.”

What is a nova?

A nova is the sudden, brief explosion from a collapsed star known as a white dwarf, that remains intact and keeps on releasing material in a repetitive cycle. It can occur for thousands of years. A supernova is the explosive death of a massive star. Rebekah Hounsell also said that there are a few recurrent novae with very short cycles. We don’t often see a repeated outburst in a human lifetime, and rarely one so relatively close to our system.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, when stars have exhausted their supply of hydrogen for nuclear fusion and begin to die, res stars appear. Our Sun will become a red giant in about 5 billion or 6 billion years.
