A fire broke out on Thursday on the spire of the medieval Notre Dame Cathedral in the French city of Rouen.
City Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol confirmed that all public resources have been mobilised. Taking to X, Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol said, “The beginning of a fire is underway on the spire of the cathedral of Rouen. The origin is unknown at this stage. All public resources are mobilised.”
French authorities said that the spire caught fire during renovation works.
The cathedral, which is a jewel of French medieval gothic architecture, was built in the 12th century and was repeatedly painted by impressionist artist Claude Monet in the 19th century.
Earlier in 2019, a devastating fire broke out at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, which was reportedly stared during renovation works.
