DGCA Postpones New Pilot Duty Rules, Citing Consultation Need.
Aviation regulator postpones new flight rules for pilots, citing need for broader consultations. Airlines seek extension over increased costs.
The implementation of new flight duty rules for pilots, aimed at reducing fatigue, has been delayed, as reported by PTI citing government officials.
The revised norms, initially set for June 1, are now on hold for wider consultations, amid concerns from airlines regarding increased costs.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) postponed the rollout to ensure thorough consideration of all factors, stated one official. This decision follows recent communication indicating no extension for airlines to adopt the updated Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations, as reported by Money Control.
The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), representing major carriers like Air India, SpiceJet, and IndiGo, had requested an extension for implementing the new regulations, released on January 8.
While the regulator emphasizes airlines’ obligation to implement the updated FDTL CAR starting June 1, 2024, the revised standards include provisions for extended weekly rest periods, limitations on night landings, and longer night shifts for pilots.
Moreover, quarterly tiredness reports are now mandatory, ensuring a non-punitive and confidential approach across all airlines.
