The L’Oréal Professionnel Creative Award has celebrated up-and-coming fashion design talent since 2001. Bandil is the second Indian designer to win the award, following in the footsteps of Ashish Gupta, whose opulent designs were on display at the William Morris Gallery in London last year, FashionNetwork.com reported at the time.

Bandil’s winning collection this year was chosen out of 21 collections by the next generation of fashion designers. Bandil hails from Morena, a small town in Madhya Pradesh, and is greatly influenced by his heritage as well as sacred power and femininity, Vogue India reported. The designer’s winning collection featured neon hued zippers, 3D cotton-cord piping, cut out denim, and bold layering for a thoroughly modern take on South Asian heritage.
