Google Messages app comes pre-installed on many Android phones.

The Google Messages app is reportedly getting the the ability to edit messages after they have been sent.

If you have experience with Apple’s iMessage or are familiar with texting through an instant messaging app like WhatsApp, you understand the convenience of editing messages. This not only spares you from potential embarrassment but also maintains the fluidity of your chat without corrections.

Despite having received RCS support, Google Messages has been missing this functionality. Nevertheless, it appears all set to change soon, as the app is reportedly getting the the ability to edit messages after they have been sent.

As spotted by AssembleDebug on TheSpAndroid, evidence of the same was found in the code of the Google Messages app. The report states that the editing feature will work when users long-press a message in the RCS chat. A pencil icon will appear on the top row after this. Once you tap on the pencil icon, the text box will open for you to edit the message.

The report further notes, “Although the editing button has appeared, the functionality does not work as expected because there may be some work still left to do.” This likely means that it could be a while before we see the public rollout of the same. The report, too, suggests it could make its way into beta by the end of this month or by next month.

That said, it could prove to be a useful addition for users who primarily communicate through the Google Messages app. While the user base is considerably small, it remains a valuable feature to have nonetheless.
