Budget 2024: Govt to form panel to examine setting up more medical colleges using existing hospital infra

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her budget speech that the government is contemplating on setting up more medical medical colleges by utilising existing hospital infrastructure. Sitharaman said a committee for this purpose will be set up to examine the issues and make relevant recommendations.
“Several youth are ambitious to get qualified as doctors. They aim to serve our people through improved healthcare services,” Sitharaman said.

“Our government plans to set up more medical colleges by utilizing the existing hospital infrastructure under various departments,” she added.

Budget 2024 Highlights at a glance
According to the National Medical Commission (NMC) that regulates medical education in India – there are 706 medical colleges of both government and private in India, offering admission to 109065 MBBS seats.
