Compressed Natural Gas/Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a by-product of the crude oil refining process, but the combustion produces less carbon monoxide, nitrogen and unburned hydrocarbons than petrol or diesel.

Furthermore, it does not produce aromatic hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide or particulate matter. Liquefied Petroleum Gas or Liquid Petroleum Gas also denoted as just propane or butane, are both flammable hydrocarbon gases used as fuel for heating, cooking and vehicular fuel.

Compressed Natural Gas storage cylinders have a tare weight approximately thrice heavier than comparable capacity LPG cylinders. LPG can be compressed into liquid, increasing its energy density. The difference between CNG and LPG vehicle is the fuel itself. CNG is methane and LPG is propane and/or butane.

CNG gas is Compressed Natural Gas storage –methane while LPG is Liquefied Petroleum Gas–propane.

There are many similarities between LPG and CNG, as well as some major differences.

Advantages of CNG:

Natural gas is significantly less expensive than petrol. The cost of natural gas is low than petrol. In some areas, natural gas costs as low as a third of the cost of petrol on the average.

CNG is more eco-friendly than petrol.

Natural gas produces far fewer harmful emissions and hydrocarbons than petrol.

Using CNG makes the engine cleaner and more efficient unlike petrol.

CNG minimises harmful carbon deposits when combusted. This results in a cleaner and more efficient engine as well as longer lasting spark plugs. Oil changes are also minimised because carbon deposits that contaminate the oil are eliminated.

CNG is abundant in Nigeria. The country has extensive natural gas resources. Switching to CNG can help ease the country’s dependence on foreign refined oil.

CNG has higher Octane levels averaging over 120 Octane.

Disadvantages of CNG:

CNG tanks require storage space. You may need to sacrifice some of the space in the trunk (for cars), truck bed (for pickup trucks) or behind the back seat (for SUVs). The CNG cylinder can be heavy, the added weight of the tank is offset by the reduced weight of a  petrol.

CNG filling stations are limited in Nigeria. CNG conversion is most practical and convenient for people living in areas with easy access to CNG filling stations -or- consider installing a home CNG fueling unit .

Generic codes

P0956: Auto shift manual mode circuit range/performance

Meaning

The transmission control module monitors the auto shift manual signal from the auto shift manual switch. The TCM sets the OBDII code when the signal from the auto shift manual switch is not to factory specifications.

Possible causes

  • Faulty auto shift manual switch
  • Auto shift manual switch harness is open or shorted
  • Auto shift manual switch circuit poor electrical connection

P0957: Auto shift manual mode circuit low

P0958: Auto shift manual mode circuit high

P0959: Auto shift manual mode circuit Intermittent

P0960: Pressure control solenoid ‘A’ control circuit/open.

Meaning

The pressure control solenoid valve an electronic pressure regulator that controls transmission line pressure based on current flow through its coil windings. As current flow is increased, the magnetic field produced by the coil moves the solenoid’s plunger further away from the exhaust port. Opening the exhaust port decreases the output fluid pressure regulated by the PC solenoid valve, which ultimately decreases line pressure. The line pressure solenoid valve regulates the oil pump discharge pressure to suit the driving condition in response to a signal sent from the transmission control module.

Possible causes

  • Faulty pressure control solenoid ‘A’
  • Pressure control solenoid ‘A’ harness is open or shorted
  • Pressure control solenoid ‘A’ circuit poor electrical connection
