ST. CLOUD — As the regular season comes closer to an end, high school wrestling teams are trying to get on a hot streak heading into the section tournament.
Along with the team wanting to do well, the individual wrestlers are looking to perfect different skills and strategies for sections as well.
Tech (a coop comprised of Tech, Cathedral, Apollo and Granite City Baptist Academy) hosted a triangular match on Friday night with Sartell-St. Stephen and Alexandria. The three teams had key and close matches throughout the night, but Tech came out as the undefeated team.
The night started with a match between Tech and Alexandria. The match ended as close as it can get in a 30-30 tie with the Tigers winning due to the third tiebreaker, which is number of forfeits.
At the beginning, the two teams traded off wins as Tanner Hugg won by forfeit and Jaxon Kenning won in a 6-0 decision. After the 126-pound match, it was tied at 9-9.
The Cardinals took over with four straight wins and a 24-9 lead. Alexandria only won one match after the 152-pound match.
Tech won five of the last six matches and allowed the Tigers to tie with the Cardinals at the end of every weight class. Since it was tied, the winner is determined by a tiebreaker system.
There were no unsportsmanlike conduct calls or penalties, which is the first tiebreaker. The second tiebreaker is number of matches won and both teams won seven in the 14 total weight classes.
The third tiebreaker is number of forfeits. Alexandria had three forfeits where as Tech had zero forfeits, therefore the Tigers won the match.
Alexandria battled in its second match against Sartell as the Cardinals went into another tiebreaker with a 34-34 tie to finish 0-2 on the night. Alexandria took an easier lead with two straight forfeits and a 12-0 lead.
Sartell came back with a 4-0 decision by Zac Anderson and a pin by Spencer Johnson to make it a 12-9 match. After those two wins, Alexandria won four of the next five matches to control the pace and extend the lead to 31-13.
Then, Sartell won four of the final five matches to create the 34-34 tie as Brett Thayer and Ethan Torgrimson finished the last two weight classes with pins. Those pins were crucial for the Sabres since the tiebreaker went to most six-point wins.
Sartell finished with four, while Alexandria finished with three. This allowed the Sabres to win the tiebreaker and earn the victory in the match.
Sartell tried to keep that momentum going in the final match of the night against Tech. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
The biggest matchup came at 126 pounds as Sartell’s Spencer Johnson, ranked No. 6 in 120-pound weight class, faced off against Tech’s Jaxon Kenning, ranked No. 7 in 126-pound weight class.
It was a close match, but Johnson finished with the 4-3 decision to give Sartell its first points in the match. The Sabres had a handful of wins after Johnson’s decision as William Budge and Dylan Welle recorded a pins, but Tech kept its lead.
The Tigers had pins from Cody Brott and Spencer Gustin, but the team also had technical falls from Mahamat Hissein and Andrew Johnson.
Tech finished the night victorious twice after winning 44-24 against Sartell.
The Tigers have two more regular season triangulars with one at Brainerd at 10 a.m. Saturday. The last match will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Willmar.
The Sabres have three more matches this season starting with a home match against Cambridge-Isanti on Tuesday. Then, Sartell will hit the road to Moorhead on Thursday and Sauk Rapids on Friday.
