Shekhar Suman is confident that the Sushant Singh Rajput death case will “reach its logical conclusion”, he said during an exclusive interview with India Today News Director Rahul Kanwal on Friday. Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14. The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, ordered CBI to investigate his death.

Excerpts from Shekhar Suman’s interview:

What gives you confidence that now that the CBI is involved, there will be closure in this case?

I think if it was not meant to happen, we would have not reached so far. It would have been brushed under the carpet. The fact that 1.3 billion people just kept at it, relentlessly, is why this happened. And God has his way of functioning and he decided to function through the voice of the people. The forces tried their best to stop it, divert it but such was the enormity of the voices that came forward asking for a CBI inquiry that no power in the world could stop it. My heart tells me that this will reach its logical conclusion.

The CBI has been asked to investigate two months after Sushant’s death. Will it be more challenging now?

Absolutely. It has made the task very daunting. Challenging. They have to start new and fresh. Might have to look for evidences that might not be there. It’s been more than 60 days, and people who wanted to tamper, presumably, have done so. They would not wait for all these things to happen. The implications that it might go to the CBI must have alerted them. They were prepared for this kid of an eventuality. It is going to be a huge monstrous task to put the pieces together and solve this jigsaw puzzle. But not impossible.

What do you make of the attitude of the Mumbai Police?

I wish I had the answer. I wish they could answer the question why did you behave in a certain manner. It seemed premeditated and preset. We have grown up hearing stories about them, they are very efficient. Why would they falter and procrastinate? On one hand, they are calling it a suicide and if they are, instead of shutting the file, they are still investigating. And yet not filing an FIR. All these things that they were doing, it seems that they were confused or maybe they were under somebody’s influence. Or they were being asked to behave in a certain manner. They were probably being asked to elongate this till people sort of forget about this. Everything looked suspicious. Once you start faltering, you continue. Evidences were conspicuous. Why were they overlooked? That’s why everybody demanded in one single voice that a CBI enquiry is needed.

What do you make of Rhea Chakraborty’s position so far?

There are gross sort of inconsistencies and irregularities. For example, few people said that they saw the body hanging. But there is no photo as such. So, whatever these people are saying, it’s mind-boggling. We should top paying forensic experts now and leave it to the CBI to find out the truth. Whatever Rhea is saying, she is contradicting herself. She herself asked for a CBI inquiry and then did a U-turn. All of them, they planned a few things in a certain manner and it did not go on in a certain manner. They were not quite prepared for it. Looking for excuses. Finding an exit route.

Has this incident polarised Bollywood? Does it reflect an inflection point of sorts after which Bollywood will be an equal opportunity for all?

Sounds Eutopian if I said it would. Some sort of a change will probably happen. I don’t think overnight it will happen after all that has happened. It will dwindle away, little bit for some time. Cannot guarantee that it will not happen. But some sort of course correction will happen. The janta has realised that they were patronising the wrong sort of people. Wish people supported Sushant when he did some film like Sonchiriya. I wish all of us had supported him in some manner. People have realised their mistake.

On backlash to Sadak 2

It comes with a statutory warning. So the warning is very clear. They have to smell the coffee now. They cannot ignore. So many stars that is why suddenly started tweeting in favour of a CBI enquiry. Now, it’s a clear cut war. Audiences have woken up. That the film industry has to recognise that these are the people who are going to decide the fate of the stars. Fate of films now.

Is there opportunism at play?

Yes, it is damage control. It is straightforward damage control. On one hand, when you talk about brotherhood and all, where were these people? To each his own. If they wanted to, it’s okay. We set out to achieve, we have achieved that. The CBI enquiry has happened. It is never too late.

Will Bollywood provide opportunities for the next small-town boy?

Now, there would be fair opportunities for all. People have realised that they cannot afford to incur the wrath of the audience. They are going to be more reliant and kind. Will be given opportunities. Support newcomers. To have that kind of comfort, that kind of assurance, where you can launch a newcomer, I think there would be equal opportunities for all outsiders coming from a small town.

The ultimate analysis is the analysis that counts. Of course, star kids have an advantage. But people are ready for change. People can spot a newcomer and patronise him. That is going to help the newcomer. People are going to be more careful in choosing now. More democratic.
