Readers respond to column about whiteness at supermarkets and groceries

Food is personal, intertwined with home, family and culture; so there is little surprise that last week’s column about “ethnic food” aisles at grocery stores tapped a hornets’ nest.

To review my crime briefly: I questioned why grocery stores categorize some staple foods by racial categories while others are treated as ordinary staple foods. For instance, why some noodles (like spaghetti) are shelved as pasta while other noodles (like udon) are kept in an “Asian” or “international” aisle.

Let’s stipulate once more that we are not discussing specialty stores catering to cultural cuisines, but the general supermarket — the presumptively neutral supplier for broad, diverse American populations.

The next charge against me was looking for the frame of reference: Who decides that soy sauce is more “Asian” than “condiment” for identification purposes? What makes some ingredients ethnic in character and others not? I pointed to the perspective of whitenessas the vantage point branding some foods as mainstream and others as exotic.
