Kangana Ranaut has never minced words, no matter who is on the other side. Her digs at Deepika Padukone have been a constant, if you look at Ranaut’s social media. In the past few weeks since Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, however, Kangana has gone all-out in her attacks on Deepika Padukone, calling the actress’s mental health awareness work a ‘dhandha’ and what not. But this is hardly the first time Kangana has taken jibes at Deepika.

After Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, the issue of nepotism and favouritism in the film industry were splashed all across social media, with Kangana Ranaut being its flag bearer. In the past, the actress has openly slammed many Bollywood biggies, but it is her consistent jibes at Deepika Padukone that has got everyone’s attention now.

Recently, Kangana Ranaut posted a series of tweets calling Deepika Padukone’s battle with depression fake and targeting her for being privileged. But where did the Kangana Ranaut and Deepika Padukone face-off start?

Their rivalry dates back to an award show in 2014.

We take a look back at Kangana and Deepika’s clash, where it all started, how it progressed over the years and Kangana’s recent attacks on Deepika.

2014: BEST ACTRESS AWARD

It goes back to the year 2014, when Deepika Padukone won the Best Actress award for Happy New Year. In her acceptance speech, the actress dedicated her award to Kangana Ranaut for her performance in Queen. Kangana, however, didn’t win any award.

Deepika’s gesture didn’t go down well with Kangana. The actress snubbed Deepika and told Hindustan Times (HT), “Yes, I heard about that, but I hope someday, she would tell me in person what she feels about my work. I would appreciate that a lot more.”

In another interview, Kangana said that Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra personally called her to praise her performance in the film. However, she never received one call from Deepika.

After Kangana’s comment, Deepika soon called her up and Kangana told HT that they had an ’emotional and heartfelt conversation’. Kangana said, “Deepika called me, and clarified that she had no personal equation with me to make a direct call (to appreciate her performance in Queen). Also, I explained to her how it would have been unjust for me to publicly acknowledge an award from her when I have decided not to attend any awards functions. It was an emotional and heartfelt conversation. I appreciate that she called me; she is truly courteous and very emotional, and I just love that.”

When the media asked Deepika about Kangana’s comment, she told them off saying that there was no need to create a fuss over a personal conversation between two actresses.

2015: TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS SCREENING

Burying all their differences, Deepika invited Kangana to a special screening of her 2015 film Piku and to the film’s success bash. Things were fine until Kangana invited Deepika to Tanu Weds Manu Returns (TWMR) screening the same year but Deepika could not attend it.

Upset with this, Kangana told DNA, “I did extend an invite to Deepika, but I never got a response. I have always been supportive of my contemporaries and will continue to be, but it is hurtful when you don’t get the same kind of support.”

It was reported that Kangana did not call Deepika for the TWMR success bash and when the producer of the film Krishika Lulla invited Deepika, Kangana walked out of the party without even saying a ‘hi’ to her.

2016: ONE-SIDED, IRRELEVANT COLD WAR

Deepika has always maintained silence on Kangana’s attacks. In an interview with Filmfare, Deepika shrugged off her cold war with Kangana and called it irrelevant. She said, “It’s only one-sided. It’s irrelevant. It’s really irrelevant. I have way too much going on in my life so what people say, what people do, what people think is really irrelevant.”

Kangana was quick to respond to Deepika’s statement. She told MissMalini, “Really?! She said that? Then why she makes these desperate calls to paint a parallel reality and sends never ending cunning texts to invite me for her trials and parties? Well, she seems rather invested in the irrelevant stuff.”

2017: WHO’S THE HIGHEST PAID ACTRESS?

Deepika charged Rs 15 crore for her 2018 film Padmaavat, which made her the highest paid actress in Bollywood at that time. Deepika told India Today Television, that she had demanded the money as she knew that she deserved it. After Deepika’s fee hike, it was reported by Mumbai Mirror that Kangana demanded Rs 15 crore from two producers. In that year, it was more than double of what Kangana was paid normally. It was said that she usually earned Rs 5-6 crore per film.

According to reports, Kangana was paid Rs 14 crore Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Kangana has reportedly been paid Rs 24 crore for Thalaivi, which is based on the life of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

2019: DEEPIKA’S FOUNDATION VS KANGANA’S FILM

In 2019, Deepika Padukone’s The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLL Foundation) questioned the intention of Kangana Ranaut’s 2019 film Judgementall Hai Kya. TLLL Foundation took to Twitter to question the intention of the post. Their post read, “It is time we put an end to the use of words, imagery and/or the portrayal of persons with mental illness in a way that reinforces stereotypes.”

It went on to say, “Many millions who suffer with mental illness in India already face tremendous stigma. Therefore,it is extremely important to be responsible and sensitive towards the needs of those suffering.”

After these tweets by TILL, Kangana’s sister Rangoli Chandel, in a series of tweets, asked the organisation to not jump the gun and question the film’s intention before watching it.

She went on to say that after seeing the film, the organisation would want to remove Deepika Padukone as its ambassador and put Kangana in that position instead. However, Deepika is not the ambassador of TLLL Foundation but its founder.

2020: KANGANA’S ALL-NEW ATTACK ON DEEPIKA

Kangana has attacked Deepika since the beginning of the year 2020. Here is a list of all the times Kangana has blasted Deepika in the year 2020.

January:

In January 2020, Deepika visited Jawaharlal Nehru University to show support of JNU students who were attacked by masked goons in the university.

After Deepika’s visit, Kangana called out Deepika. In a conversation with India Today Television, Kangana said, “Deepika knows what she should have done. She’s been within her democratic line. But if you ask me, if I was given the choice, I’d never go and stand behind the Tukde-Tukde Gang, because I don’t like them. I don’t think they are right.”

She added, “I think women should support women and I don’t want to comment on what she did and what she should have done. She knows what she should have done and she is prepared to bear the consequences, so why should we be bothered about that? Also, she is within her democratic rights. She has not stepped out of the line. She has not done anything that will have any severe consequences. If you ask me and if I am given a choice, I would never go to a place and stand behind the Tukde-Tukde Gang”.

She went on to say, “I don’t like the Tukde-Tukde Gang. I feel they are wrong and these are my opinions. I don’t understand why they want to divide the country. I don’t get the logic. I don’t understand why they get so happy when our soldiers are martyred. They celebrate it. They bleed when terrorists are hanged. Who are these people who are concerned about Nirbhaya’s convicts? Who are they? I don’t understand. They call them buddhijeevi (intellectuals), they call themselves liberals. I don’t get the logic behind calling themselves liberals or intellectuals. I don’t think I will stand behind them and empower them. On Deepika’s matter, I would say that we should not lose the idea of democracy. She should express herself, which is what she precisely did – and I mean it’s good for her.’’

In July again, Kangana lashed out at Deepika for visiting JNU students. She wrote on Twitter, “Bechari @ReallySwara toh aaj tak sab freefund mein ka rahi thy yaken nahi ho pa rahi ki Deepika ko JNU jane ke paise milte hai (sic).”

June:

Kangana called paparazzi photographers Deepika’s “pets”. She wrote, “This criminal not only took part in an illegal guild that was made only to emotionally & mentally harass one individual but he also threatened Rangoli maam when she confronted him, this fool does not even realise that its not us but his Deepika who has accused him of making money (sic).”

For the context, here is Kangana’s another tweet. “Deepika Padukone is quick to blast Yogen Shah, who mostly caters to Hindi media and is one of the only few who didn’t ban Kangana, what about her paltu paparazzi @manav22 and @viralbhayani77 , her heart doesn’t ache when they monetise Sushant’s videos? @deepikapadukone (sic).”

July 28:

The reports after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death stated that the actor was suffering from depression and it led to his suicide. Kangana disagreed with this theory. She wrote, “Mumbai Police is exposed big time, Sushant’s family said they don’t trust them, also Bollywood’s “repeat after me”gang, depression ka dhanda chalane wale should be remanded @deepikapadukone #RheaChakraborty #WhyFearCBIForSSR (sic).”

July 29:

Kangana also lashed out at Deepika for not inviting her to Padukone’s wedding with Ranveer. Incidentally, Sushant Singh Rajput also wasn’t on the guest list. On July 29, sharing a photo from the wedding, Kangana wrote, “This is a picture and article from Deepika Ranveer wedding, they called Pakistani agent and conspired JNU protest but boycotted only two top stars one is killed other one fighting for her survival #justiceforshushantsinghrajput #Deepika (sic).

August 2:

Kangana also called out the Public Relations agency that handles the work of Deepika, along with that of Hrithik Roshan, among others. She alleged that they run “smear campaigns” against her. Kangana wrote, “This agency is none other than Spice who handles work of Deepika Padukone, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and many more in the industry, since 2014 they have been doing consistent smear campaigns against Kangana but their time is up (sic).”

August 9:

Kangana Ranaut called Deepika “a self-proclaimed mental illness patient” on August 9. She wrote, “Ranbir Kapoor is a serial skirt chaser but no one dare call him a rapist, Deepika is a self proclaimed mental illnesses patient but no one calls her a psycho or a witch, this name calling is reserved only for extra ordinary outsiders who come from small towns and humble families (sic).”

August 18:

In an interview with India Today Television, Naseeruddin Shah spoke on the politics involved in Sushant Singh Rajput. He also said, “No one is interested in the opinions of some half-educated starlet who decides to take it upon herself to you know, get justice for Sushant,” referring to Kangana.

Kangana reacted to Shah’s statement on Twitter. While replying to Shah, Kangana also took a jibe at Deepika. She wrote on Twitter, “Thank you Naseer ji, you weighed all my awards and achievements which non of my contemporaries have on the scale of nepotism, I am used to this but would you say this to me if I were Parkash Padukone/Anil Kapoor’s daughter (sic)?”

August 19:

In her most recent attack, Kangana has called Deepika’s battle with depression fake. She wrote, “Repeat after me, depression ka dhandha chalane walon ko public ne unki aukat dikhadi #CBIforShushant #SushantSingRajput #1stStepToSSRJustice (sic).”

Kangana’s tweet was based on Deepika’s earlier tweets from June 20. Deepika shared two tweets on June 20 and June 19, where she talked about depression and mental health. She shared these tweets six days after Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead on June 14. In the beginning of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death investigation, it was reported that the actor was suffering from depression from the past six months. Deepika’s posts were based on these reports.

Deepika had written, “Repeat After Me. You cannot snap out of depression (sic),” “Repeat After Me. Depression is not the same as sadness (sic),” and “Repeat After Me. Feeling depressed is not the same as feeling sad (sic).”

Kangana shared two more tweets yesterday (August 19), blasting Deepika. She wrote, “Truth remains there is no valid medical proof of mental illness, it has become new witchhunt of genuine talent by mediocrity, every extraordinary individual is being subjected to unfair judgements n virtual emotional lynching. Hope this stops (sic).”

She added, “If @deepikapadukone says she suddenly got depressed for a break up which happened 10 years ago, we believe her so give me and Sushant same respect if I say I am not mentally ill or if Sushant’s father says he wasn’t mentally ill believe us also na. Why you forcing illness on us (sic)?”

Kangana has been consistently lashing out at Deepika, the Chhapaak actress has, however, maintained her silence on the same.
