Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor chose to carve a path that is quite different from his glamorous sisters Sonam and Rhea Kapoor. The youngest child of Anil and Sunita Kapoor, Harsh is building up a portfolio of ‘slightly different’ films and refuses to be cast in typical masala entertainers. He is the lesser-known Kapoor and prefers to be that way. In a free-wheeling chat with ETimes, he speaks about watching movies while growing up, his passion for direction, and the relationship he shares with siblings Sonam and Rhea Kapoor.

You come from a family of acting stalwarts. Was a career in Bollywood always on the cards?
From a very young age, my dad used to collect films and had a large collection of VHSs and LaserDiscs. So, every day after school, I would come home and watch a film. When you are at such a young and impressionable age, your mind gets shaped very quickly. So, those influences from watching films from all over the world happened to me very young. And then I kind of became obsessed with the media and wanted to do something in films. Then I studied films and actually started writing, which went on for four years in Southern California. Within that program, I did acting. It was when I was training myself as an actor, for about a year, that I realised that I liked being on screen, it was something that I enjoyed. It took off from there.

As a child did you ever visit your father’s sets?
No, not really. I mean, I didn’t really feel like watching my father on screen or anything in particular. I just wanted to be an actor because I love films, but I did visit him on the sets of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ because I really wanted to meet Danny Boyle; I was a huge fan and had grown up loving ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘The Beach’. I couldn’t believe that he was in India, making a film with my father. They were shooting at Karjat and it was pretty surreal meeting him. So yeah, that’s probably like my most memorable experience of visiting my dad on the sets.

What was the first advice you got from your father when you decided to become an actor?
There have been loads of conversations, but I remember, when I met Vikramaditya Motwani for ‘Bhavesh Joshi’, my father was always there. He has been very supportive of slightly different and alternative career choices that I’ve made. It has been great!

You previously mentioned that you don’t much prefer the limelight and hence are never spotted anywhere. Is it a conscious decision?
For me, personally, I don’t think I can do the whole gym look every day; I would just go crazy and run away or something (laughs). I need my privacy. The way that I see it–and maybe it’s a bit naive and idealistic–but I like to do a film, talk about it, and then disappear. I’m a very boring guy, which is why I don’t have a girlfriend (chuckles). And if that’s what the paparazzi thinks, so be it. I’m comfortable with that. And I’d rather just honestly do the films and have people say good things about the work. But then again the limelight works for some people, they’re really good at it. But I don’t really have a problem with being out of the limelight.

You speak so passionately about being behind the camera. Are there any plans of becoming a director in the future?
Absolutely, that’s my dream! Right now, I’m obviously just completely focused on acting, and have a lot of films in hand. But, at some point in my life, 110 per cent, I will have to direct a film. I know that I’m going to do it, but first, I need to gather a lot more experience. Maybe, at some point, if I find a story that I see that I can tell and then direct the film, but then also simultaneously act as well, I’ll do it. But directing is something that I want to do.

Anil Kapoor refuses to age and is a fitness enthusiast. Is it a family thing?
Yes! We don’t really work out together because of our timings, but all of us do lead a healthy lifestyle. I exercise daily and I fast. Sometimes I eat a very controlled diet and sometimes I let myself go, but I never really get out of shape tremendously. It is very important to feel good from the inside and look good on the outside and be good in your films. Fitness is an important part of life.

What is the update on the Abhinav Bindra biopic? It has been delayed for so long now…
The shooting hasn’t started yet, it will begin this November or December in Chandigarh. Basically the reason why it has taken so long is because we have a new writer and director now. Simon, who wrote ‘Neerja’ is writing this biopic now. Normally, when a script takes time, people start wondering what’s happening to the film, but it’s a big responsibility. You’re making a film about somebody who is alive and young and such a phenomenal athlete. He’s the only person to have won Olympic gold individually ever as an Indian. So, it’s a huge responsibility and you want to take your time to make the best possible film. You want to make sure that you’re committing to a certain direction within the story. The shoot should definitely begin from the end of the year.

Describe your relationship with Sonam and Anand?
It’s great, but I don’t get to see them as often as I would like to, because they don’t live so much in India. They spend a lot of time in London. Sonam and I talk more about fashion, clothes, and how we like to live our lives really. Sonam, Anand, and I like to do small vacations every time we get a chance. Like, I went to Dubai with them to celebrate my birthday in November after shooting for a film. We always try to call each other and see in what part of the world we can link up. It’s been a little difficult, obviously because of the pandemic. But hopefully if travel restrictions ease in the middle of this year, then we’ll be seeing each other very easily.

With Rhea and Karan Boolani going strong, is there a second wedding soon going to happen in the family?
I don’t know about that… honestly I have no idea about their marriage plans.
