Acclaimed actor Stephen Graham is set to return to screens with ‘Adolescence’, a powerful new drama directed by Philip Barantini. The four-part series, written by Jack Thorne, is confirmed to release on March 13, 2025, exclusively on Netflix, as mentioned in a report by Radio Times.

Following the success of ‘Boiling Point’, which was also shot in a single continuous take, Graham and Barantini reunite for another high-intensity production.

This time they are exploring the devastating impact of a violent crime on a family and their community.

A Shocking Crime Unfolds

At the heart of Adolescence is 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl from his school.

As the case unravels, the emotional weight falls on his father, Eddie Miller (Stephen Graham), who is left struggling to understand what led his son to such a tragic act.The investigation is led by Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, played by Ashley Walters, while Erin Doherty takes on the role of Briony Ariston, a clinical psychologist assigned to assess Jamie.

The Inspiration Behind ‘Adolescence’

Speaking at Netflix’s Next on Netflix event, Graham, who also serves as an executive producer, shared his motivation for developing the series.

“Over the past decade, knife crime among young boys has become an epidemic across the country,” he explained.

“Certain cases really stuck with me—young boys taking the lives of young girls. It made me ask, ‘Why? What’s happening in our society?’”

Graham emphasized the knee-jerk reaction many people have when hearing about such crimes—blaming the parents.

However, Adolescence challenges this assumption.

“We’re all guilty of immediately judging the family, blaming the mum and dad. But what if that’s not the case? What if there’s something much deeper at play?” he reflected, as quoted in a report by Radio Times.

A Unique One-Take Cinematic Experience

Director Philip Barantini brings his signature immersive style to ‘Adolescence’, with each episode filmed in a single continuous take.

Barantini clarified that this approach was not intended to be a gimmick but rather a tool to heighten the tension.

“We wanted to create an experience where viewers can’t look away. In today’s world, people watch TV with one eye on their phone. With this series, you can’t afford to miss a second,” he said.

By eliminating cuts, the cast is forced to stay completely in character for one unbroken hour per episode, making the performances raw, real, and emotionally intense.
