The Noida Traffic Police will soon implement lane driving rules on three major roads in an effort to reduce traffic jams. Drivers who violate these rules will face a fine of Rs 1,500. Sudden lane changes, particularly during the morning and evening peak traffic hours, significantly increase traffic jams and the risk of accidents. The Noida Traffic Police have introduced this measure to curb such behaviour and improve traffic flow.

According to Times of India, traffic police report that slight braking manoeuvres for lane changes often trigger a chain reaction. Vehicles following behind brake more abruptly to prevent collisions, potentially leading to traffic slowdowns or complete stops. These sudden lane changes also heighten the risk of sideswipe and rear-end collisions.

On which roads will the rule be applicable

The traffic police have said that this new rule will be included at the Charkha roundabout near Amity University, the route from Gardens Galleria Mall to Film City, and the bird feeding point near Dalit Prerna Sthal.

The Charkha roundabout on the Noida Expressway experiences significant traffic congestion as it serves as a convergence point for vehicles coming from Sectors 125, 126, and 128, as well as those travelling towards Kalindi Kunj, Sarita Vihar, and Jamia Nagar. This confluence of traffic contributes to increased traffic pressure in the area.

Similarly, the bird feeding point near Dalit Prerna Sthal experiences traffic congestion due to vehicles travelling towards Chilla Border, Film City Flyover, Sector 18, and DLF Mall. Drivers frequently change lanes abruptly, leading to traffic obstructions.

The route between Gardens Galleria Mall and Film City caters to commuters travelling from Botanical Garden, GIP Mall, and Sector 18 towards Noida Expressway, Greater Noida, Chilla Border, and DND Flyway. This route also witnesses frequent lane changing incidents, contributing to traffic delays.

Designated lane-changing zones to be established

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lakhan Singh Yadav stated that the identified stretches experience heavy traffic throughout the day, intensifying during peak hours. To address this, the Noida Authority will establish designated lane-changing zones approximately 500 metres before these points, allowing commuters to change lanes in a controlled manner.

Cameras will be installed to monitor violations and issue penalties. Currently, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras on the expressway do not detect such infractions. Officials disclosed that efforts are underway to upgrade this system to enable the monitoring of such violations.

This rule will be applicable on other roads as well

The traffic police have not yet announced the exact date for enforcing lane discipline. However, officials have indicated that if successful, similar measures could be implemented on other roads. ‘On expressways, which have two-three lanes in each direction, the right lane is used for overtaking, the middle lane is for cars and the left lane is for heavy vehicles,’ said S Velmurugan, chief scientist at the Central Road Research Institute.
