Following the inauguration of the world’s highest railway bridge, India is now on the verge of unveiling its longest railway tunnel. Indian Railways is nearing the completion of this record-breaking tunnel in the hill state of Uttarakhand. The railway line will feature multiple long tunnels, significantly enhancing travel convenience for those journeying to Chardham.

The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag New BG Rail Line project, undertaken by Indian Railways in Uttarakhand, spans a total length of 125.20 km, with 105 km of the track passing through tunnels.

Once completed, the railway line will reduce the travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag to just two hours, compared to the current seven-hour road journey. This will result in considerable savings of both time and money.

17 Tunnels And 35 Bridges To Be Constructed

This ambitious project includes the construction of 17 tunnels along the 125-km track, playing a vital role in connecting the 12 stations on this line. Additionally, 35 bridges are being built to navigate the hilly terrain. The longest tunnel on this route, stretching 15.1 km, is under construction between Devprayag and Lachmoli.

Advanced technology is being employed to minimise environmental impact during the construction process.

Total Tunnel Construction Span

The Ministry of Railways recently announced that the construction of tunnels and stations for this project is progressing rapidly. Out of the planned 213 km of tunnels, 176 km have already been completed. Work on 11 stations is also advancing steadily.

Upon completion, the railway line will boost tourism and improve connectivity for local residents to other parts of the country.

Benefits For Five Districts

The tunnel system is being built in two parts: a main tunnel for trains and a secondary safety tunnel for emergencies. A crossroad will connect the two tunnels every 500 metres for added safety.

Five districts in Uttarakhand, namely Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli, will greatly benefit from this project. Additionally, the new railway line will simplify travel for devotees heading to Chardham.
