Bengaluru is set to get a 40-km tunnel road that promises to ease the city’s heavy traffic jams.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the tunnel has already been completed by the BBMP, as per India TV.

What the Tunnel Will Cover?

The 40-km tunnel will include two main corridors:

  • An 18 km-long north-south tunnel, connecting Hebbal flyover in the north to the Silk Board junction in the south.
  • A 22 km-long east-west tunnel, linking KR Puram in the east to Mysore Road in the west.

According to the feasibility study, a single-tube tunnel will be more cost-effective than a twin-tube tunnel.

To fund this ambitious project, BBMP plans to raise a loan of Rs 19,000 crore from the open market. This comes after the state government agreed to act as a guarantor for the loan.

BBMP aims to use private investment to build part of the tunnel. If successful, some of the loan will also fund a separate underground road connecting KR Puram to Nayandahalli.

Phases and Costs of the Project

The project will be carried out in two phases:

  • Phase 1: The north-south corridor, stretching from Hebbal to Silk Board, will cost Rs 16,500 crore, excluding land acquisition. BBMP will contribute Rs 6,500 crore, with private investors covering the rest.
  • Phase 2: The second phase involves a 28-km underground road from KR Puram to Nayandahalli, estimated to cost Rs 25,000 crore. Work on this phase is yet to begin.
