The Hargreeves family bid farewell in the series finale of the popular Netflix show The Umbrella Academy, which premiered its last episode, “End of the Beginning,” on August 8, 2024. The conclusion of the fourth and final season left fans both satisfied and yearning for more.

While the show has officially ended, whispers of a possible spin-off have surfaced, with showrunner Steve Blackman and the original comic’s creator, Gerard Way, expressing interest in continuing the story.

The Legacy of The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy, based on Gerard Way’s comic book series illustrated by Gabriel Bá, follows a group of unconventional adopted siblings who seek to unravel the mysteries surrounding their father’s death, all while grappling with the threat of an impending apocalypse.

The Hargreeves siblings—Allison, Diego, Luther, Viktor, Five, Klaus, and Ben—along with Lila, who joins later, captured the hearts of viewers over four seasons. The final season, however, received mixed reviews, with a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a noticeable dip from the previous season’s 91%, as mentioned in a report by Collider.

Future Prospects: Hints of a Spin-Off

In a recent interview with Radio Times, Steve Blackman, the showrunner, expressed his hopes for a return to the world of The Umbrella Academy. “Absolutely,” Blackman said when asked about the possibility of a spin-off. “At the end of the day, it’s up to Netflix. I have a number of different spin-offs I would do.” He emphasized that the universe of The Umbrella Academy still holds many untold stories, not just centered around the Hargreeves family but also involving other intriguing characters.Blackman hinted at potential storylines, saying, “I can definitely say there’s stories at the Commission, there’s some Hazel and Cha Cha stuff that’s unresolved that I’d love to talk about. There’s a lot. I have quite a few ideas, actually”, as quoted in a Collider report. He also noted that Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, who created the original comic series, have their own thoughts on how the story could continue.

Reflecting on the end of The Umbrella Academy, Blackman shared the emotional experience of concluding the series. “It’s really sad. I had such a great time with these actors and the crew and the writers, so I knew it would come to an end, but I didn’t think I’d be as emotional,” he said. Writing the final scene, Blackman admitted to feeling tearful, realizing that he might never write for these beloved characters again.

The cast members also echoed Blackman’s sentiments, expressing their hopes for a continuation. Ritu Arya, who played Lila, stated, “I’m never done playing Lila. I love her.” Aidan Gallagher, who portrayed Five, agreed, adding, “I agree, there’s a lot of places the characters can go.” Robert Sheehan, known for his role as Klaus, teased, “Never say never!,” while Tom Hopper, who played Luther, concluded, “It would have to be Steve doing it. But never say never about getting the band back together.”
