NEW DELHI: China’s state-owned China Ocean Shipping Group (Cosco) has launched the world’s largest fully electric container ship Greenwater 01. The vessel is set to operate weekly between the major coastal cities of Shanghai and Nanjing.
According to reports from state broadcaster CCTV, the Greenwater 01 is propelled solely by batteries, marking a significant stride in eco-friendly shipping practices.
The ship saves 3,900kg (8,600 pounds) of fuel and cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 12.4 tonnes for every 100 nautical miles traveled. In its inaugural voyage, Cosco expressed optimism about the ship’s potential contribution to global carbon emission reduction efforts within the shipping industry.
According to the South China Morning Post, the ship is equipped with a primary battery exceeding 50,000 kilowatt-hours. The vessel also offers flexibility for extended journeys, with additional battery boxes that can be loaded to increase its range. This however makes it essential that port officials conduct inspections to ensure the safety of the battery packs and effectiveness of the fire detection and alarm systems.
Measuring approximately 120 meters in length and 24 meters in width, the Greenwater 01 can attain a maximum speed of around 19km/h (12mph).
The Greenwater 01 boasts several world records among electric container ships, including its dimensions, container capacity and battery storage.
