Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari Advocates EVs But Owns None, Check His Car Collection. (News18)
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, known for advocating electric vehicles, surprisingly doesn’t own any. His affidavit reveals ownership of conventional cars only.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has always been a proactive advocate of electric car usage and alternative fuel options in order to curb pollution.
He has been spotted being driven around in various electric cars and hydrogen-driven fuel cars. Recently, the Union Transport Minister filed an affidavit for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, which revealed the number of cars that the minister owns.
A surprising takeout from the affidavit was that the Union Minister doesn’t own any electric vehicle. As per the affidavit, his cars include a 2016 Honda CR-V, an Isuzu D-Max and a 1994 model HM Ambassador.
According to Cartoq, Nitin Gadkari has disclosed the ownership of just three vehicles in his affidavit ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections in 2024. The Union Minister has reportedly valued the HM Ambassador sedan at Rs 10,000, the 2016 Honda CR-V at Rs 16.75 lakh, and the latest addition, the Isuzu D Max pickup, at Rs 12.55 lakh.
Apart from that, Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that his wife, Kanchan Gadkari, owns a 2014 Toyota Innova valued at Rs 5.25 lakh, a Mahindra worth Rs 4.10 lakh and a Tata Intra commercial pickup worth Rs 7.19 lakh.
Even though he has mentioned these cars in the affidavit, the Road Transport Minister is not usually seen travelling in these cars. He is mostly seen travelling in official government vehicles, which are occasionally electric or hybrid vehicles.
Nitin Gadkari has always promoted the use of electric vehicles as part of his vision to make a transition into a green economy. Recently, the Union Minister revealed that he has plans to reduce GST on hybrid vehicles and eliminate the country’s dependence on over 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles.
If the GST on EV vehicles is reduced, then it can also lead to a substantial decrease in the prices of EVs. He also mentioned that this move can have potential benefits for the country, including that the money spent on fuel imports can be saved to improve the lives of farmers, boost rural prosperity, and provide more employment opportunities for the youth.
