Nikon, the Japanese camera giant, announced on Thursday its intention to acquire RED Digital Cinema, a renowned US manufacturer of high-end movie cameras. This move marks Nikon’s foray into the world of cinema and comes shortly after the resolution of a legal dispute between the two companies over alleged patent infringement.

RED Digital Cinema, founded in 2005, has earned acclaim for its range of cutting-edge products tailored to meet the demands of top-tier filmmaking. Nikon lauded RED’s role as a pioneer in digital cinema cameras, noting its industry-defining contributions and widespread adoption in Hollywood productions. RED’s excellence in image quality has even earned it an Academy Award, solidifying its status as a preferred choice among directors and cinematographers.

The acquisition of RED by Nikon is expected to foster collaboration in developing unique offerings for the professional digital cinema camera market. Nikon emphasized the synergies between the two companies, with Nikon’s reputation for reliability complementing RED’s expertise in cinematography. By leveraging their respective strengths, Nikon and RED aim to continue pushing the boundaries of film and video production.

In an official statement, Nikon Corporation announced its agreement to acquire 100% ownership of RED.com, LLC, making RED a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nikon. This acquisition is subject to the satisfaction of certain closing conditions outlined in the Membership Interest Purchase Agreement with RED’s founder, James Jannard, and current President, Jarred Land.

RED’s legacy of innovation, from the original RED ONE 4K camera to the latest V-RAPTOR [X] with proprietary RAW compression technology, has positioned it as a leader in the digital cinema industry, earning it recognition and accolades worldwide.

Nikon’s expertise in product development, reliability, and image processing, combined with RED’s knowledge in cinema cameras and color science, will drive the development of distinctive products for professional filmmakers.Nikon plans to capitalize on this acquisition to expand its presence in the rapidly growing professional digital cinema camera market.
