Apple iOS 18 is set to be a major upgrade.
Apple’s next-generation chipsets, the M4 and the A18, are expected to “greatly increase the number of built-in AI computing cores.” Here’s what you need to know.
Earlier this year, multiple reports suggested that iOS 18, the upcoming major update following iOS 17, is set to feature a plethora of generative AI-based features to better compete with industry giants like Google and Samsung.
Now, a new report from Economic Daily News suggests that this could indeed be the case. According to the report, Apple’s next-generation chipsets, the M4 and the A18, are expected to “greatly increase the number of built-in AI computing cores.”
The report added: “This year, it will not only greatly strengthen the AI computing power of M3 and A17 processors, but also significantly increase the number of AI computing cores and performance of the new generation of M4 and A18 processors, and the carrying rate of AI applications in all product lines will be greatly improved.”
It goes without saying, but Apple has worked to improve the iPhone’s Neural Engine with every generation since its initial introduction. As noted by MacRumors, Apple’s Neural Engine core count has nearly stayed the same since iPhone 12 models, but year-over-year, Apple has made notable improvements. iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro chipset, for instance, has a Neural Engine that is up to twice as fast as what you got with the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic.
Also, it remains to be seen if Apple’s highly talked about AI features make it to the older generation models with iOS 18, including the iPhone 15 series, or if Apple decides to reserve them exclusively for the upcoming models.
That said, iOS 18 is expected to be revealed in June during the WWDC 2024 event. It remains to be seen how deeply Apple integrates AI into the OS, with increased competition from the likes of Google and Samsung’s big AI push using the Gemini LLM.
