While many nations have supported India’s long-standing campaign for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, it appears that influential business leaders and intellectual voices are now also strongly in favour of this idea.

Whether it’s the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine or the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the world is facing many challenges. Many have expressed concern about reforming the current UNSC structure and adding more members to make it more powerful to address these challenges.

During one of such debates discussing the efficacy of the UNGC, Michael Eisenberg responded to UN Secretary General António Guterres and questioned why India is not having a permanent seat on the UNSC. Eisenberg also asserted that this could be the time to dismantle UNGC and create a new multilateral body with visionary leadership to steer it through challenges.

The debate became more interesting after Elon Musk also waded into it and posted, “at some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. Problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat imo”.Making the case for IndiaLast year, in April, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar commented that India would soon become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) . “Westerners cannot keep their door closed for India for long. While several developed countries are facing economic distress, India is emerging as an economic superpower. Hence, the UNSC will be compelled to provide permanent membership,” he said.India got a big shout-out for the cause after US President Joe Biden reaffirmed support for India’s permanent membership of the UNSC during the G20 Summit.

A joint statement from India and the US after bilateral talks between PM Modi and US President Joe Biden said, “Continuing to share the view that global governance must be more inclusive and representative, President Biden reaffirmed his support for a reformed UN Security Council with India as a permanent member, and, in this context, welcomed once again India’s candidature for the UNSC non-permanent seat in 2028-29.”
