The half-day session brought together representatives from Reliance Industries, Bestseller, United Way Mumbai, IDH, as well as government, academia, and civil society, all aligning on India’s potential leadership in sustainable fashion, Apparel Resources India reported. The discussion, led by Roop Rashi Mahapatra, chief executive of KVIC, focused on actionable strategies to transform India’s fashion ecosystem through innovation and inclusion.

The NMC will operate as an advisory think tank, supporting circular fashion systems, green finance, SME and artisan access, and sustainable international trade frameworks. “India is circular by nature,” said Mahapatra, Apparel Resources India reported. “Textile waste is a source, not a problem.” Mahapatra also called for policy-level vision to drive on-the-ground change.

The formation of the NMC signals a strategic shift towards value-driven fashion leadership in the face of global climate imperatives. Neha Gupta, founder of IFBEC, said, “This committee is not a token one. It is a joint mandate for measurable change. Sustainability should be lived, not legislated.“This is a declaration that Bharat will no longer be sewn into someone else’s value chain,” added Harshavardhan Chauhan from Bharat YEF.
