Russell Wilson’s responsibilities as the starting quarterback of the New York Giants do not formally include mentoring rookie Jaxson Dart, but his approach to team leadership has made him a valuable presence throughout the organization. Wilson, signed in March to a one-year deal, has been working exclusively with the first-team offense during spring workouts.
New York selected Dart with the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, trading back into the first round to secure the former Ole Miss quarterback. Wilson said his approach to leadership is team-wide and not limited to the quarterback room. “It’s about everybody in the building,” Wilson said. “From the quarterback room to the offensive line to the defensive backs and training staff—everyone plays a part.”
Veteran QB sets tone for Giants locker room
Since joining the Giants, Wilson has emerged as a key leader. He recently hosted a dinner with quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and running backs, and earlier this offseason organized throwing sessions in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Atlanta with different offensive teammates.Giants wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson noted the immediate impact of Wilson’s leadership style. “We haven’t had a quarterback that commands everything like this,” Robinson said. “He’s been great.”Despite the addition of Dart through the draft, Wilson emphasized that his mindset has not changed. “It doesn’t change anything,” Wilson said. “For me, it’s about being my best every day and leading every room I’m in.”
Wilson’s on-field presence was evident during organized team activities (OTAs) this week. He drew praise for multiple big plays, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darius Slayton under pressure.

Wilson and Dart coexist as Giants plan for future
The Giants coaching staff has emphasized that Wilson is not being asked to serve as Dart’s formal mentor. However, head coach Brian Daboll acknowledged the value of having experienced players like Wilson in the locker room.
“It’s a natural thing just going about your business,” Daboll said. “I think there’s value in talking to a veteran player and asking about routine or how they see a play.”
The expectation is for Dart to learn through observation, study, and informal interactions with Wilson and Winston. Daboll added that leadership is one reason the team wanted a veteran presence in the quarterback room.
Wilson, meanwhile, said his focus remains on daily preparation and team execution. “Every day is about being the best in the world,” Wilson said. “I stay focused on the process and know how valuable that is.”

The Giants hope the combination of veteran leadership and rookie development will stabilize the quarterback position after six years of Daniel Jones. For now, Wilson is in control of the offense while Dart adjusts to the NFL level.
