Chennai Metro is all set to make travel simpler for passengers moving between Poonamallee and Chennai Central.

Having said that, a new skywalk is being built to connect the old (Phase I) and new (Phase II) Vadapalani stations, allowing commuters to switch lines without stepping onto the road.

What’s Happening with Chennai Metro Phase II?

As per The Hindu, this skywalk will be a key feature for those using the busy Vadapalani station, which links the 54 km Phase I and the 118.9 km Phase II networks of the Chennai Metro.

The first part, from Poonamallee to Porur, will open later this year. Next year, the stretch from Porur to Vadapalani and Kodambakkam will be ready for passengers.

The walkway will lead passengers straight from the ticketing level of Phase II to that of Phase I. This means travellers no longer have to exit one station, cross the road, and enter another – saving time and offering added safety and comfort.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has already invited bids for the skywalk project. It will take about three months to select a contractor and another six months to complete the build. The skywalk will cost nearly Rs 10 crore and is part of the overall project budget.

The walkway will be approximately 130 metres long and 6 metres wide, fully covered for commuter comfort and safety. Since Vadapalani station is due to open next year, CMRL has planned to start the skywalk construction immediately to ensure it’s ready for public use in time.
