New Zealand motorcycle racer Shane Richardson has died following a severe crash during a race at Oulton Park in Cheshire, England. The 29-year-old Wellington native was one of two riders killed in an 11-bike collision during the British Superbike National Superstock Championship on May 6, Tuesday (NZ time).The crash occurred on the race’s opening lap. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but both Richardson and British rider Owen Jenner (21) died from their injuries. The race was red-flagged and later cancelled.

Less than a day before the race, Richardson shared a video on Instagram featuring a segment from an interview where he talked about his excitement for the upcoming race.

Richardson was a prominent figure in New Zealand motorsports. Known for his dedication and skill, he began racing as a teenager and steadily built a career on the domestic and international stage. He moved to the UK to pursue professional opportunities and was competing for the Astro JJR Triumph team this season.

Motorcycling New Zealand expressed condolences to his family and friends in a statement: “Shane was a passionate competitor and a proud Kiwi who represented New Zealand with honour.”


Richardson’s team also paid tribute, remembering him as a talented and determined rider. Fellow racers and fans described him as warm, humble, and committed to the sport he loved.Motorsport Vision Racing (MSVR), the event organiser, said: “Our thoughts are with their family, friends and teams at this deeply sad time. The races scheduled for Sunday were cancelled as a mark of respect.” MSVR has launched a full investigation into the incident.Shane Richardson’s crash shocked the motorsport world and renewed the focus on safety measures in high-speed motorcycle racing. On Monday, a minute’s silence was held at Oulton Park in memory of both riders.

Shane Richardson is survived by his partner and family in Wellington. Memorial details are expected to be announced soon.
