T2 will be temporarily closed for renovations for four to six months to accommodate rising domestic passenger numbers.

T1’s expansion, completed in March 2024 under Phase 3A, has increased its area from 55,740 sq. m to 206,950 sq. m.

From 15 April 2025, Terminal 1 (T1) of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will become fully operational, with all flights from Terminal 2 (T2) shifting here, according to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).

Earlier this year, DIAL announced that T2 would close temporarily for four to six months for upgrades. This refurbishment aims to prepare the terminal for an expected increase in domestic travellers.

Flights to Move from T2 to T1

Currently, T2 handles around 270-280 flights daily, carrying over 46,000 passengers. Most of these flights are operated by Akasa Air and IndiGo. As part of the transition, these flights will now operate from T1, with airlines being notified in advance to ensure a smooth shift.

As per The Indian Express, DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, stated: “We are pleased to announce that Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 will be fully operational from 15 April 2025. This is a major milestone in improving passenger experience and meeting the growing demand for air travel. All flights from Terminal 2 will be moved to Terminal 1 as part of this process.”

T1 Expansion & New Facilities

This transition is part of Delhi Airport’s modernisation efforts. T1 was expanded under the Phase 3A development plan and officially opened in March 2024.

The terminal now covers 206,950 square metres, a significant increase from its previous 55,740 square metres. It boasts upgraded infrastructure, including:

  • Advanced baggage handling systems
  • Self-service check-in kiosks
  • Automated security checks
  • Direct Metro connectivity

Passengers will also benefit from improved lounges, shopping and dining options, and enhanced accessibility features.

With T1’s expansion, Delhi Airport is set to become the only airport in India capable of handling over 100 million passengers per year. T1 alone will accommodate up to 40 million passengers, complementing Terminal 3’s capacity and the soon-to-be-vacant T2.
