“The drug duty should be reduced to zero,” IPA general secretary Sudarshan Jain told ET.
The IPA and other pharma lobby associations have made this suggestion to the government. India currently levies an around 10% import duty on drugs from the US, while the US doesn’t charge any import duty on drugs from India.
Representatives of pharma companies and industry lobby groups have been holding meetings with the Ministry of Commerce on the issue, a person in the know told ET.
Jain said the duty on various cancer medicines have already been brought to zero in the latest budget and whatever is left should be done now. “The import from the US is $800 million annually. They are all high-priced products and if we reduce the duty to zero, it will help the Indian pharma industry,” he said.
