Air India has strengthened its long-standing partnership with Lufthansa Group by signing a new codeshare agreement with Austrian Airlines.

The expanded agreement also extends the existing partnership with Lufthansa and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), creating more flight options for passengers between the Indian Subcontinent and Europe.

The extended codeshare network now covers nearly 100 routes operated by Air India, Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines, providing increased connectivity across 12 Indian cities and 26 European cities. The new addition includes 26 routes by Austrian Airlines, alongside the 55 routes already available through Lufthansa and SWISS.

Passengers flying with Air India will now have more choices, including 26 destinations in Europe and 3 destinations in the Americas from their European gateways (Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich). The Lufthansa Group airlines, including Austrian Airlines for the first time, will now operate flights to various cities including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Munich, and São Paulo, along with other destinations like Washington D.C. and Rio de Janeiro.

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, stated, “The expansion of our partnership with Lufthansa Group is a step in that direction, and we are pleased to take this long-standing relationship to the next level.”

In return, Lufthansa Group customers can now connect to Air India’s domestic services from 15 Indian cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Lufthansa Group airlines will also add codes to Air India’s international flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Kathmandu, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, added, “Europe and India and offer our passengers improved access to additional destinations. Lufthansa Group remains committed to India, and we are excited about the possibilities and potential the country and Air India as a partner have to offer.”

Air India and Lufthansa Group’s expanded codeshare network also includes flights between India and Germany or Switzerland, offering passengers multiple daily flight options, including those operated by both Air India and Lufthansa.

The partnership allows both airlines to gradually include additional destinations in their codeshare network. Additionally, frequent flyers from Air India’s Maharaja Club and Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More programmes can continue to earn and redeem points/miles and enjoy benefits such as priority services and lounge access across the globe.
