In a bid to alleviate Mumbai’s chronic traffic congestion, a recent cabinet meeting has given the green light to explore pod taxis, a mode of transport already popular in Europe. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will conduct a survey to assess the feasibility of implementing this system. With land-based transport infrastructure already stretched to its limits, the government is actively seeking innovative solutions to mitigate traffic jams.

During Eknath Shinde’s tenure as Chief Minister, plans for an 8.8-kilometre pod taxi route from Bandra to Kurla (via BKC) were approved. This latest development suggests a broader vision for expanding the pod taxi network across Mumbai. Cable cars are also being considered as a potential solution to the city’s traffic woes.

Sarnaik’s Gujarat Visit

To expedite the pod taxi proposal, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik visited Vadodara in Gujarat. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari’s vision, Vadodara is already in the advanced stages of constructing a pod taxi lane. With 80 percent of the work completed, the service is expected to commence in April.

Pod taxis and cable cars, both driverless systems, are widely used in Europe. Often referred to as ‘Personal Rapid Transit’, pod taxis resemble electric cars and operate 5 to 10 metres above ground. Each pod can accommodate approximately 8 seated and 13 standing passengers.

Considered one of the world’s most advanced and eco-friendly transportation systems, pod taxis are gaining popularity globally for their speed and comfort.
