There are 26,367 Public EV Charging Stations across India, with Karnataka topping the chart with the highest number of these points, numbers shared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Lok Sabha revealed on Thursday.
Karnataka has 5,879 Public EV Charging Stations, followed by Maharashtra at 3,842 stations, the data shows. Uttar Pradesh is at the third spot with 2,113 points. These are the only three states with more than 2,000 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations. Karnataka is alone in the ‘above 5,000 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station’ group.
Only eight states have Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations above 1,000 — Delhi (1,951); Tamil Nadu (1,495); Kerala (1,288); Rajasthan (1,285) and Gujarat (1,008).
Both Ladakh and Lakshadweep have just one Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station each. Along with these two Union Territories of India, a total of 11 states/UTs have less than 50 public charging points — Arunachal Pradesh (44); Meghalaya (43); Puducherry (42); Nagaland (36); Chandigarh (14); Mizoram (13); Sikkim (11); Union Territory Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (six); and Andaman & Nicobar (four).
The ministry also said that under FAME-II Scheme, a subsidy support of Rs 800 crore was sanctioned in March 2023 to three Oil marketing companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) for setting up 7,432 public charging stations at their Retail Outlets across the country.
“As of January 1, OMCs have installed 4,523 number of EVCS at their retails outlets under FAME Scheme out of which 251 EVCS has been energised. Further, MHI (Ministry of Heavy Industries) sanctioned an additional Rs 73.50 crore for installation of 980 Public Charging stations in March 2024. In addition, 400 charging stations have also been sanctioned in various states,” the ministry said.
MoRTH also explained that National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), through National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) envisions development of Wayside Amenities at approximate intervals of 40-60 km along National Highways and Expressways.
“EV Charging Stations have been provisioned as mandatory facilities on these WSAs. So far, 50 WSAs having EV charging facilities are operational. Presently, the government has targeted to award around 700 Wayside Amenities. Out of 700 WSAs planned, 458 have been awarded, of which 90 are operational,” the ministry explained.
