IndiGo, India’s largest airline by fleet size and market share, has ramped up its flights and seat capacity to and from Prayagraj to cater to the huge demand generated by the ongoing Maha Kumbh.

Originally, IndiGo planned to increase its capacity significantly but had to make further adjustments due to “unprecedented demand,” the airline said in a statement on January 30, as per Money Control.

The airline will now operate about 900 flights to and from Prayagraj, an increase from the 490 flights it had initially planned during the world’s biggest religious gathering. Over the course of the Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13 and runs until February 26, IndiGo will offer more than 160,000 seats, doubling its usual capacity.

To support the surge in demand, the airline has expanded its connectivity, now offering direct flights from Prayagraj to 10 cities, including Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Jaipur. Previously, services were available to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Raipur, and Bhubaneswar.

IndiGo has also increased capacity on existing routes by adding frequencies and deploying its larger A321 aircraft.

Following a government directive to address rising ticket prices, IndiGo has reduced fares by 30-50 percent, according to Moneycontrol.

Prayagraj’s connectivity has grown significantly, with direct flights now available to 17 cities (up from 8 in December 2024) and connecting flights to 26 cities, including Srinagar and Visakhapatnam. Other airlines, such as SpiceJet and Akasa Air, have also added thousands of extra seats to meet the demand.

Key Highlights:

  • Flights increased from 490 to around 900 for the Maha Kumbh period
  • Direct connections increased from 7 to 10, with special services to Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Jaipur
  • Seats doubled to over 160,000, with larger A321 aircraft in use
