A new report has revealed the traffic situation in major cities of India in 2024, with Bengaluru ranked as the city with the second slowest traffic in the country and Kolkata taking the top spot
The tech hub of Bengaluru is infamous for its dismal traffic situation. But would you believe that the city is not the one with the slowest traffic in India? There is one other city that trumps Bengaluru to claim this notoriety.
According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2024, the traffic in Kolkata is slower than that in Bengaluru, which is placed second on the list.
Kolkata, once known as a calm city, has now emerged as the city with the slowest traffic in India. The report states that vehicles move slowly in the City Of Joy, and traffic jams have become a common sight. This situation has worsened due to the city’s old roads, narrow streets, and increasing population, it says.
Bengaluru is also struggling with a similar traffic crisis. Heavy traffic jams, long delays at traffic lights, and late arrivals have become routine in the city. The situation is exacerbated by outdated infrastructure and rapid urban development.
Several factors contribute to the growing traffic issues in cities like Bengaluru and Kolkata. These include an increasing population, a rise in the number of vehicles, and a lack of adequate public transport options. Additionally, road construction and development projects are often delayed, further complicating the traffic situation.
The TomTom Traffic Index 2024 provides insights into traffic situations in 500 cities across 62 countries regarding their travel times and levels of congestion and how it affects commuters. The data is collected using more than 600 million connected devices, which could include an in-car navigation system or through a phone, the Times of India reported.
