A highlight of the G 580 is the G-Turn, which allows it to rotate 720 degrees on the spot.
Mercedes-Benz has launched the highly anticipated G 580 Edition One in India at a price of Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom).
Officially called the G 580 with EQ Technology, this electric version of the iconic G-Class will be sold alongside the facelifted AMG G 63 (Rs 3.64 crore).
Bookings for the G 580 opened in July 2024, and the vehicle is already sold out until Q3 2025. Mercedes will showcase the G 580 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in Delhi next week.
Mercedes Benz G 580: Design
The G 580 retains the classic G-Class boxy design, specifically resembling the G 450d. Apart from the EQ badges, the G 580 features a partially raised bonnet with air curtains, a redesigned A-pillar, and a roof spoiler for improved aerodynamics and reduced cabin noise. The rear wheel-arch flares also include air curtains for better efficiency. The LED lights outlining the front give the EQG a unique appearance.
Mercedes has improved the car’s drag coefficient, bringing it down to 0.44 from the G 450d’s 0.48. As an electric vehicle (EV), the G 580 swaps the traditional spare wheel with a holder for the charging cable.
Mercedes Benz G 580: Features
Inside, the G 580 feels very much like the classic G-Class, with only a few changes to accommodate the EV. The MBUX multimedia system, featuring twin 12.3-inch screens (one for the driver and one for infotainment), remains unchanged. Below the screens are physical buttons for controlling heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. The G 580 also gets adaptive cruise control via a steering wheel button.
The “Offroad Cockpit” controls are positioned in the centre of the AC vents for off-road driving. The boot offers 555 litres of space, though this is smaller than the petrol and diesel G-Class versions. There’s no ‘frunk’ either, which some other EVs have.
Mercedes Benz G 580: Battery & Charging
The G 580 is powered by a 116kWh battery, identical to the EQS but stored differently. It supports charging speeds of up to 200kW and has a claimed range of 473 km (WLTP cycle). A fast charger can recharge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 32 minutes.
The electric G-Class is equipped with four motors, one for each wheel, and a two-speed gearbox. The total power output is 587 bhp, with 1,164 Nm of torque. The G 580 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 180 km/h.
Mercedes Benz G 580: Off-Road Capabilities
The G 580 maintains its independent front suspension, but it now features a rear rigid axle and virtual mechanical differential locks for optimised torque vectoring. The vehicle also comes with a low-range transmission and an off-road crawl function that allows it to drive at speeds as low as 2 km/h. Water wading capacity has been improved to 850mm, an increase of 100mm over the standard G-Class, thanks to its electric setup.
One of the standout features of the G 580 is the G-Turn, which allows it to rotate a full 720 degrees on the spot. It also comes with G-Steering, which reduces the turning circle by pivoting around individual wheels.
