The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway provides vital connectivity to several major towns in Haryana, including Sonipat, Rohtak, and Jind.
Travelling by road from Delhi to Amritsar’s Golden Temple and the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir has just become significantly more convenient and comfortable. The highly anticipated Greenfield Expressway, part of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra National Highway, has now been inaugurated and officially opened to traffic. This new route, which stretches through Haryana, will revolutionise long-distance travel between Delhi, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.
The road is designed for high-speed travel with an access-controlled, four-lane layout, allowing vehicles to reach speeds of up to 120 km per hour. One of the standout features of this new stretch is its toll system – a modern, boothless toll collection system has been implemented, streamlining the entire process.
The expressway, built through Haryana’s Jhajjar district, has strong railings along both sides to prevent animals from straying onto the road, as well as extensive greenery along the central divider. The highway’s design also incorporates fountains to irrigate the plants and improve the aesthetic appeal of the route. The expressway is designed to accommodate both light and heavy motor vehicles, though motorcycles and auto-rickshaws are prohibited. Clear signage has been installed along the route to ensure drivers are aware of these restrictions.
The Greenfield Expressway provides vital connectivity to several major towns in Haryana, including Sonipat, Rohtak, and Jind. With seven toll plazas in operation across a stretch of 117 km, the tolling system is similar to the KMP (Kundli-Manesar-Palwal) Expressway, where the toll charges increase based on the distance travelled. The route’s well-planned infrastructure aims to significantly reduce travel time for passengers and freight alike.
The expressway has a speed limit of 120 km/h for light vehicles and 80 km/h for heavy vehicles, with signs placed every 100 metres to indicate the distance travelled.
Travellers who have had the chance to experience the new expressway have expressed enthusiasm over the improved travel conditions. Rahul, a passenger en route to Vaishno Devi, shared his excitement, “This expressway will make the journey much smoother and faster, especially when travelling to the Mata Vaishno Devi temple. The new highway will save us a lot of time.”
While the expressway promises a more convenient journey, passengers are advised to take precautions. As of now, rest areas, fuel stations, and eateries along the route are not yet operational. Travellers are urged to fill up their vehicles with fuel before setting off and to carry sufficient food and water for the journey. Additionally, there are no mechanics available on the expressway, so drivers should ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on their trip.
The opening of the Delhi-Amritsar Katra National Highway is not only a significant infrastructure achievement but also a vital link for pilgrims heading to revered sites like Vaishno Devi and the Golden Temple. The expressway is expected to boost tourism, ease traffic congestion, and provide a faster route for freight transport, offering a major economic uplift to the region.
