Shorts will no longer confine itself to short videos on YouTube

YouTube Shorts are going longer from later this month as the platform looks to appeal to the creators and also match up to the rivals.

YouTube Shorts will support longer videos, allowing creators to upload content up to three minutes long starting October 15. The platform has primarily focused on videos up to 60 seconds where it rivals TikTok and Instagram Reels. This update comes in response to creator feedback, as it was one of the most requested features, providing more opportunities for storytelling.

The change will only affect videos with a square or vertical aspect ratio, and any videos uploaded prior to the implementation date will remain unaffected. Furthermore, YouTube has committed to enhancing its recommendations for longer Shorts in the coming month.

Additionally, the platform now allows users to recreate their favourite Shorts using templates. These templates come with fresh music and unique elements, enabling users to experiment with the latest trends. To utilise these templates, users can simply select the “Remix” option on a favourite short and click “Use this template.”

In the coming months, YouTube will expand the content accessible through the Shorts camera, allowing users to remix music videos, clips from their favourite videos, and more seamlessly. This new feature will enable users to extract content from various YouTube videos, enhancing their creative options and interactivity on the platform.

Furthermore, the video-generating model Veo from Google DeepMind will soon be available on YouTube Shorts, the company has also stated. Imaginary settings and stand-alone video clips will enable producers to realise their visions with this concept.

By adding a new option named “Show fewer Shorts,” YouTube users will have even more possibilities to tailor their feeds to their interests. Clicking the three dots menu located in the upper right corner of any Shorts grid in the user’s Home feed will allow them to select this option. Users’ Home feeds will momentarily display fewer Shorts when enabled.
