‘Stree 2’ tops charts with over ₹100 cr box office collections

Mumbai: Stree 2, a Hindi horror comedy film, emerged as one of the biggest hits of 2024 so far, grossing more than ₹100 crore in just two days of release on August 15.

The film, a co-production between Maddock Films and Jio Studios, brought in a total of ₹118 crore in gross receipts at the box office on Thursday and Friday. Net collections were ₹100.1 crore.

Stree 2 is the fifth instalment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe, a sequel to the 2018 movie Stree. It features Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana.

Apart from Stree 2, cinema exhibitors anticipated films like Khel Khel Mein, Vedaa, Thangalaan, and Double iSmart to perform well, but they did not meet their expectations. All these films were released on August 15.

According to data from box office tracker Sacnilk, Akshay Kumar-starrer comedy film Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham’s action-thriller Vedaa have garnered ₹7.1 crore and ₹8.1 crore, respectively, in net domestic box office collections on the first two days.

Tamil action adventure Thangalaan and Telugu sci-fi action Double iSmart have collected ₹18 crore and ₹9 crore, respectively.Elara Capital senior vice-president Karan Taurani had predicted a significant box office boost on Independence Day, providing relief for exhibitors amid muted occupancy levels so far in the July-September quarter.He expects Stree 2 to outperform and report a net lifetime box office collection of ₹150 crore based on its strong opening. “Momentum is likely to pick up in Q3 FY25, led by several large franchise films across genres,” he added. According to media consulting firm Ormax, gross domestic box office receipts were ₹5,015 crore in the first half of the calendar year.
