The list of reconditions by THMA comes at a time when the country has reported a huge number of people, who died in road accidents due to bad or non-ISI-certified helmets.
Amid the growing sales and manufacturing of fake or non-ISI-certified helmets in the market, the Two-wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association (THMA) has proposed a set of recommendations to the Indian Government.
Under the detailed suggestions, the association has highlighted some important pointers, suggesting the concerned ministry enforce stringent rules for road safety and educating the public about the importance of wearing a good quality helmet.
This comes at a time when the country has reported a huge number of people, who died in road accidents due to bad or non-ISI-certified helmets. Here’s a List of Top Recommendations
Proper Quality Check
THMA has suggested the government act strictly on (Quality Control) Order, 2020, which mandates that all helmets must carry the BIS mark. It ensures that the helmet is of a genuine quality, ensuring complete safety for the riders on the road, and preventing them from encountering with head injuries during accidents.
The association also asked the government to penalise distributors and retailers who sell such helmets under Clauses 29 and 30 of the BIS Act, 2016.
Inspections
According to THMA, the government should equip and empower enforcement agencies, particularly the police, to identify and seize substandard helmets. It has also recommended to make surprise inspections of retail outlets on a regular basis.
Ban on Roadside Sales
The association suggested stopping the roadside sales of helmets as most of them belong to the substandard, fake, or refurbished category. These sellers don’t even provide proper invoicing.
Awareness Campaigns
It has been suggested to hold nationwide informative campaigns, educating the public about the importance of wearing BIS-certified helmets.
The association requested that e-commerce giants Amazon, Ola, Uber, Flipkart, Rapido, Swiggy, and Zomato, to keep a close watch on their delivery partners to use only BIS-certified helmets for good road safety.
Here’s What THMA President Says
Commenting about the safety norms for two-wheeler riders, the THMA president said, ” By implementing these recommendations, we can significantly enhance road safety and protect the lives of millions of riders across India.”
