Sony has backtracked on its order to link the account for the game.

The company wanted PSN account linking to be done for the game from this month which could have made it unusable for many.

Helldivers fans have finally gained traction after fiercely criticising Arrowhead Game Studio and Sony’s project. Sony Interactive Entertainment, the publisher of the squad-based shooter game, issued a retraction statement this week regarding their previous claims of making it essential for players to link their Steam and PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts.

The earlier deadline for the change was May 6, which barred gamers from over 170 countries. Hundreds of thousands of scathing reviews from fans flooded the platform, forcing Sony to finally confront the big issue.

“Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required a Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward,” PlayStation wrote on its official X account (Formerly Twitter), breaking silence on the unpopular policy.

The officials proceeded to emphasise that they are “still learning what is best for PC players.” Fans’ “invaluable” reaction pushed the historic reversal, with Sony promising to provide details on its future intentions soon.

Sony will no longer force Helldivers 2 Steam players to link a PSN account to continue playing. This was especially problematic for overseas gamers whose nations do not have access to PSN. The previously enacted punitive regulation resulted in the game being delisted in about 177 regions, preventing players from accessing the game despite its initial sales terms. Helldivers 2 is now available worldwide on PC and PlayStation 5.

Social media fans were informed on May 5 by Arrowhead CEO and Helldivers 2 Creative Director Johan Pilestedt that their team was “talking solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries,” as per reports. He made it clear that he didn’t have the last word, even if he told the people that their “voice has been heard.” Arrowhead is not involved with game sales, he added.
