Two-wheeler maker TVS Group company TVS Electronics plans to enter the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) segment for defence and railways products, said a senior executive.

The company is working on a plan to scale up production from its surface mount technology (SMT) line which was operationalised in February this year, K Srinivasan, associate vice president of customer service and support for businesses at TVS Electronics, told ET.

“We are expanding our presence in the EMS space. We have hired a dedicated resource to look into this business that is being developed as an independent business to scale,” Srinivasan said.

The SMT line has been introduced at the company’s Tumakuru plant in Karnataka and is currently being used to cater to captive demand, he said.

The company currently manufactures products such as label printers, barcode scanners, thermal printers, infrared thermometers, pulse oximeters, webcams, currency counters and detectors, among other products for retail, banking, shipping and logistics companies.

TVS Electronics, however, is not looking to offer the EMS facility for high-volume businesses, Srinivasan said, adding that the Tumakuru plant offers end-to-end solutions, encompassing printed circuit board (PCB) assembly, product testing, box build and supply chain.

SMT is a widely used technology in the EMS industry, which permits the assembling of electronic components on a PCB. The components are mounted directly on the surface of the board, as opposed to through-hole technology, where the components are mounted through holes drilled in the board.TVS Electronics is also in talks with multiple tech partners and plans to have six lines up and running for SMT by 2028 at its Tumakuru plant. The company has Taiwanese, South Korean, Japanese and Chinese partners for its existing products such as thermal and barcode printers, said C Balaji, vice president-PSG Business, TVS Electronics.

“We got the technical know-how and started adding value in India, as part of Made in India initiatives. Now we are trying to use our EMS facility for both captive and even for their PCB requirements,” Balaji said.

The first phase would be to use that PCB for the company’s existing product being sold domestically, following which it will also be used to meet clients’ exports and international demand. In the third phase, the company plans to offer both the EMS and the factory facility for box build and PCB requirements.

Box build assembly systems, also known as box builds, are an overall systems integration which involve arranging PCBs and other custom cable components to form a complete system.

The Tumakuru plant, which incorporates Internet of Things integration, robotics and automation, supply chain digitisation as well as shop floor control system is also prepared to handle components as small as 0.1mm by 0.2mm, ensuring readiness for upcoming technologies. The SMT line features digitalised processes for enhanced traceability, productivity monitoring and quality control, Balaji said.
