Chennai Metro sees record March ridership with 86.82 lakh passengers, marking a steady increase from previous months, signaling growing commuter reliance.

Chennai Metro Rail witnessed a bustling month in March as a whopping 86.82 lakh passengers hopped on board the metro trains, marking a notable increase compared to previous months.

The surge amounted to 67,449 more passengers compared to February, as reported by The New Indian Express.

According to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the trend has been on an upward trajectory since January, with 84.63 lakh passengers in January and 86.15 lakh passengers in February. This steady rise indicates a growing reliance on metro services among commuters.

Notably, March 4 witnessed the highest influx of passengers for the month, with approximately 3.34 lakh individuals utilizing the metro transit system.

Breaking down the ticketing preferences, the majority of passengers, totaling 37.64 lakh, utilized travel cards, followed by 13.95 lakh passengers opting for the Singara Chennai card.

Additionally, 2.05 lakh passengers utilized online QR codes, while 2.47 lakh opted for static QR codes. Paper QR codes were used by 20.05 lakh passengers, with 4 lakh passengers making use of the Paytm facility.

The surge in metro ridership reflects the growing popularity and convenience of Chennai’s metro network among the city’s residents.
