iPhone 17 series models could finally support 120Hz refresh rate in 2025

Apple is giving more reasons for people to wait for the 2025 iPhone 17 series lineup because of this upgrade.

Apple has some good and bad news for iPhone buyers this week. The company is likely to keep the ProMotion or 120Hz refresh rate screens exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in 2024 but expect the brand to have the feature for all the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models next year onwards.

Android phones costing below Rs 30,000 now offer the 120Hz LTPO display but Apple has kept it limited to the 1 Lakh+ models for its buyers since 2021. But a new display source suggests the company is now ready to upgrade all the iPhone models in 2025 to the LTPO panel which not only brings adaptive refresh rates but also supports Always-on-Display feature.

This means that the iPhone 17, going up to the 17 Pro Max launching in 2025 will support dynamic refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz depending on what you are doing on the screen. The new report from The Elec suggests Apple has been working towards expanding the feature to all the models but the company only got the display samples in late 2023 which meant the 2024 iPhone lineup were unlikely to be ready to get the new panels.

However, Apple is now ready to push the feature to all the iPhone 17 models, which means a lot of buyers might want to wait for 12 more months before going big on the latest iPhones. The report says Apple is relying on BOE to supply the iPhone display panels for 2025 but it is not certain that the company will persist with just one vendor to meet its sky-high demands.

One thing is for certain, if the iPhone 17 series does get the ProMotion display, expect Apple to jack up the price of the base model further, which will be in line with the company strategy in recent years.

We have already seen Apple introduce the Dynamic island on all the iPhone 15 series models last year, so it makes sense for the company to now go full throttle and finally give all the iPhone users a taste of its premium features without having to spend on the Pro models.
